Example Sentences
If so, that’s a problem: Scientists think Geminga and Monogem produce a substantial amount of Earth’s overabundant positrons; they’re near enough and old enough for that to make sense.
“If the interstellar medium is really as impenetrable to these particles as they’re saying, and Geminga and Monogem are both 250 or so parsecs away, the nearest supernova are at least that far away, and they would suffer from exactly the same problems.”
The scientists focused on gamma rays originating from the vicinity of two nearby pulsars that could blast Earth with positrons—Geminga and PSR B0656+14, located some 815 and 950 light-years from Earth, respectively.
To find out, Hooper’s team analysed gamma-rays emitted by the nearby Geminga pulsar and observed by HAWC.
