reverse cowgirl
or reverse cowboy [ri-vurs kou-gurl]
What does reverse cowgirl mean?
Giddy up! Reverse cowgirl is a sex position in which a woman straddles a male partner while facing away from him.
Where does reverse cowgirl come from?
The origins of the phrase reverse cowgirl are pretty obvious, at least once you get a mental picture. A woman straddles her partner like a horse, hence cowgirl, and she does it facing away from them, hence reverse. Not rocket science.
The sex act, just to cover all our bases, can be vaginal or anal, allowing for its same-sex counterpart, the reverse cowboy.
We have no way of verifying when the first couple tried this sex position, but it was likely millennia ago. We do know, however, that by the 1970s, people had started using the term reverse western to describe the position. The term reverse cowgirl really starts taking a ride, though, in the 1990–2000s.
Lookups for reverse cowgirl spiked in spring 2010 when American recording artist T-Pain released a song titled “Reverse Cowgirl.” The lyrics are a pretty clear reference to the sex position. Here’s just a taste: “Just put your hands in the air / Wave em round and go / Ewwww…Haaa Eee…ahhh”
Examples of reverse cowgirl
Who uses reverse cowgirl?
You’re most likely to see a reference to reverse cowgirl in a sexual context. Self-help articles and books guide (usually) heterosexual women through every step of the process, instructing them on the right angles, amount of pressure, and movements to maximize pleasure.
Opinion on the reverse cowgirl is split. Haters say it’s too much work for the woman while her partner gets to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. In self-help articles and with industry professionals, fans counter that the woman has a lot of control and the man has a great view. Win-win?
Q. What’s your favourite sexual position?
A. The majority of girls say doggy-style, but I’m a dominant girl who likes to take control. So my favourite, and most pleasurable position is reverse cowgirl.https://t.co/oHYe4xKZZH— BabestationCams (@BabestationCams) March 24, 2018
Of course, with all things sexual, the internet has jokes. Because the woman is facing away from her partner and doesn’t need her hands, she could be doing, well, anything.
Reverse cowgirl so I can keep eating my chips and salsa.

The equestrian spirit of the term also lends itself to horse-themed sex jokes …
My wife wanted to try reverse cowgirl so I quickly agreed. It was pretty cool but I found the saddle a bit uncomfortable.

Outside of sexual contexts, straddling anything backward can be referred to as a reverse cowgirl. Other cheeky uses of the term play off the perceived inequality of the position. If you’re reverse cowgirling, you’re giving more than you get in return.
Watch out for the face with cowboy hat emoji 🤠; it is often going for naughty ride on social media.
