What is back formation?
Back formation is the creation of a new word by removing a real or supposed affix. Affixes are short sets of letters like dis- or –able that are added to word stems to form a new word.
Take the word housekeeper, for example. The ending –er means “one who.” Housekeeper literally means “one who keeps the house.” If you take off the ending, or suffix, -er, you get the verb housekeep. This is a back formation from housekeeper. In other words, the verb housekeep was created after the noun housekeeper.
Many back formations involve taking a noun and turning it into a verb, but not always. As you will see, many everyday words that you’re no doubt familiar with, like diagnose and obsess, were created via back formation. Take a look!
