What does twin flame mean?

Twin flames are two people in a close relationship (romantic or not) who are allegedly connected on a spiritual level to the point that they are said to be two halves of one soul in different bodies.

The term twin flame is used in spiritual discussions of romance and relationships. In general, the term twin flames is used to describe two people who seem to share one soul, having a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses. The term twin flame is often used to refer to romantic relationships, but it can also describe other types of extremely close relationships.

Twin flame is used similarly to the term soul mate, referring to a person who is a perfect match for another. However, soul mate is typically used to describe a person who perfectly complements another person. Twin flame, on the other hand, is used to describe an even deeper connection, including shared strengths and weaknesses. While soul mates seem perfectly matched, twin flames could struggle in a relationship because they are so alike on a deep level.

While the term is much older, twin flame gained wider popularity in the early 2020s due to widespread usage on social media.

Example: Alex is my twin flame, and although we argue a lot, I can’t see myself with anybody else.

Twin flame refers to two people who are deeply connected to the point that their souls are mirrors of one another. The term itself references this connection by metaphorically comparing the people to identical flames that come from the same fire. The term also references the fact that the people have identical spiritual “flames,” that is, souls.

The term twin flame has been used since at least the early 1990s. At the time, it was most likely to be used by people interested in spirituality and spiritual explanations of romance. Since the 1990s, twin flame has gained wider popularity thanks to wider usage on the internet, especially on social media.

Think of a twin flame as whatever that little missing piece to completing you is. Like yin and yang—you’re one, they are the other. But most importantly, twin flame relationships are rare.
