Where does Easter emoji come from?
Before we get into all the emoji used to symbolize the holiday, it’s helpful to know a little bit about it. Easter is a central Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. The holiday is linked to the Jewish holiday of Passover and shares a lot of the same symbols—except for the cross, of course. It also draws from ancient pagan traditions and imagery.
The first Christian observance of Easter is dated to the mid-second century. The date of Easter changes depending on the lunar calendar, but it usually occurs in early spring. That’s why so many of the symbols of Easter are so closely related to springtime and the new birth (i.e., new life, resurrection) that occurs at that time of year, including newborn lambs, chicks, and rabbits.
This brings us to all the emoji possibilities for this holiday. Every year around March since at least 2013, people turn to Google to try to find an Easter emoji. Unfortunately for these searchers, there is no one, single, official Easter emoji.
But there are many options for the holiday. Animal symbols include a Rabbit Face 🐰, Rabbit 🐇, Hatching Chick 🐣, and Baby Chick 🐤 emoji. There is also an Egg emoji 🥚, though there’s no decorated Easter egg.
For more religious symbols related to this Christian holiday, users can select from the Church ⛪, the Latin Cross ✝️, and Orthodox Cross emoji ☦️, and emoji used to represent prayer, like the Raising Hands 🙌 and Folded Hands 🙏 emoji.
And oh, how could we forget the multi-purpose Chocolate Bar 🍫 emoji—good for all chocolate-related events, from Halloween to Valentine’s Day to Easter. Users often take to these emoji in combination.

Some people claim that the Hatching Chick 🐣 or Rabbit Face 🐰 emoji (think Easter bunny) are the “official” Easter emoji, but, again, no such thing exists. This has led to a bit of debate on the ole Twittersphere about what the Easter emoji is.

That said, designers have released packages of stickers and specialized emoji you can use in addition to or instead of the official Unicode emoji for your Easter messages. These stickers show such things as Easter eggs, adorable bunnies, and even adorable bunnies in Easter eggs.
If you’re focusing on the religious aspect of the holiday, the Latin cross ✝️, Church ⛪, and prayer-related emoji, like Folded Hands emoji 🙏 are the way to go. If you’re focusing on the less overtly religious, try the animals like Baby Chick emoji 🐤, flower emoji like Bouquet emoji 💐, and food emoji like Egg emoji 🥚. And don’t forget the Chocolate Bar emoji 🍫. Because you can’t go wrong with chocolate on Easter.
Despite the large number of emoji available for Easter, users still make their own suggestions for additional images they’d like to see.
Funny that the easter emoji is 🐣 instead of The Lord enjoying a big supper, passing away and returning once more to scare his friends.
