Where does fuck up some commas come from?

Smash The Club

“F*ck Up Some Commas” is the name of a song by rapper Future. The song was first released on his mixtape, Monster, on October 28, 2014. The lyrics of the song talk about both making and spending huge amounts of money—in the thousands and millions—in a lavish, celebratory way.

The commas in the phrase is a reference to the commas in large dollar amounts (e.g., $1,000 to $10,000 to $100,000,000). Fuck up is “to mess up,” as in messing up where the comma in a number is correctly supposed to be.

The song’s title and refrain caught on almost immediately on social media, with the first public tweets referencing it within days of the mixtape’s release. Around April 2015, the song was remixed several times, featuring Lil Wayne, which, among other remixes, contributed to a huge surge of search interest for the phrase.

The clean version of the song, titled “Commas,” peaked at number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop charts in June 2015. The single was certified Double Platinum by April 2017.
