Lawrence, an English soldier and author of the twentieth century, known for leading a rebellion of Arabs against the Turks in World War I and for his book describing the experience, , Seven Pillars of Wisdom. At the negotiations that produced the Treaty of Versailles, he argued unsuccessfully for independence for the Arab nations.
