  1. Prizes given annually in Hollywood by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for excellence in film performance and production. The symbol (see also symbol) of the award is a small statue called an Oscar. The academy's top awards are for best picture, best director, best actor and actress, and best supporting actor and actress.
