Coined in 2005 by U.S. cartoonist Nicholas Gurewitch (born 1982) as a nonsensical term in a strip of his webcomic The Perry Bible Fellowship; shortly thereafter repurposed by users of the website 4chan to replace the slur Wapanese (either w(hite) ( def ) or w(annabe) ( def ) + Japanese ( def ) )
