The award was originally known as the Booker Prize, and then as the Man Booker Prize from 2002 until 2019, when the name reverted to the Booker Prize.

The Booker Prize is considered one of the most prestigious awards in English language literature. The award also includes a large cash prize.

Originally, it was open only to authors from the UK or Ireland, but it is now open to authors of any nationality.

There is also an International Booker Prize for authors of fiction books translated into English and published in the U.K. or Ireland.
