Nicknamed Ötzi, after the valley where he was found, the iceman became a sensation — capturing the imagination of people around the world and giving scientists unprecedented insight into ancient Europeans.
But ancient DNA research has advanced since then, so scientists decided to take another look at the iceman’s genes, explained study author Johannes Krause, a geneticist at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.
After all, they’ve been raised by a woman who says things like: “Don’t touch the cooler in the bathroom. It’s got iceman samples in it.”
The new analysis suggests the iceman’s dramatic death, shot in the back with an arrow, remains the most unusual aspect of the find.
