- a former designation for cranial remains, 10,000–30,000 years old, found in the Transvaal of South Africa in 1913: once thought to be a unique species ( Homo capensis ) of exceptionally large-brained hominid and believed by some to be evidence of a so-called Boskop race, it has since been identified as a variation of the modern human and thus a member of Homo sapiens .
