The award was originally known as the Booker Prize, and then as the Man Booker Prize from 2002 until 2019, when the name reverted to the Booker Prize.
The Booker Prize is considered one of the most prestigious awards in English language literature. The award also includes a large cash prize.
Originally, it was open only to authors from the UK or Ireland, but it is now open to authors of any nationality.
There is also an International Booker Prize for authors of fiction books translated into English and published in the U.K. or Ireland.

The Booker Prize was established in 1969 by publishing industry professionals as an effort to increase discussion of modern English language literature. It was modeled after the Prix Goncourt, a similar award for French fiction.
The Booker Prize was named after its original sponsor, the Booker McConnell Company. From 2002 to 2019, the name of the award was changed to the Man Booker Prize after a new sponsor, the Man Group. The name was changed back to the Booker Prize in 2019 when sponsorship changed again. The award now known as the International Booker Prize was established in 2005.
