What are the BAFTAs?

The BAFTAs is a popular name for the annual film award ceremony of BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

The awards presented during this event are also called BAFTAs. The award ceremony is sometimes called the BAFTA Film Awards or the British Academy Film Awards. 

BAFTA is a charitable organization focused on supporting artists and professionals in creative fields, including filmmaking, television, and gaming. Although the academy is based in the U.K., it has an international focus.

The academy also hosts other award ceremonies, including ones for television and video games, and these are also sometimes called the BAFTAs, though the focus of the ceremony is often specified, as in the television BAFTAs. The same goes for awards given during these events, as in She won a television BAFTA for her role in the miniseries.

When are the BAFTAs?

The 2024 BAFTA Film Awards will take place on Sunday, February 18. The BAFTA Film Awards are usually held each year in February.

Other BAFTA award ceremonies are held throughout the year, including ones for television (usually in May), video games (usually in March or April), and children’s media (usually in November or December).

The British Film Academy was formed in 1947 to support British filmmaking. In 1958, the academy merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors. During the 1970s, the British royal family began to devote funding to the academy, and it was officially renamed as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. 

The academy established its awards for film in 1949. Awards for television were introduced in 1954. A separate ceremony to honor artists and professionals in children’s media was established in 1996, followed by one for video games in 1998.
