Some rare decays of a B quark involve a daisy chain of reactions, ending in a different, lighter kind of quark and a pair of lightweight particles called leptons, either electrons or their plump cousins, muons.
The main character, or perhaps villain, in this drama is a particle called a B quark, one of six varieties of quark that compose heavier particles like protons and neutrons.
The Higgs field uses the Higgs boson to interact with other particles, like the b quark, and give them mass.
Both particles contain one beauty, or b, quark, one strange quark and one down quark.
Their “spin” changes their configuration around, in the Xi_b’- state, the spins of the two lighter quarks point in the opposite direction to the b quark, whereas in the Xi_b*- state they are aligned.
